A collaboration of Sabri Reed and Andrew Barco
My long-time collaborator and I, Sabri Reed started the DeLaurence Performance Investment InCorporated as a venue to publicly share and distribute, through pushcart and mail order catalogue, instruction sets and tools for private performative exercise. We see these kits, which grow out of our studio and performance research (and that of other collaborators we meet along the way) as ways anyone can engage in a daily personal practice of perceptual and material play. We engage the public as small business owners, taking the familiar interactions of retail as opportunities for playful disruption of expectations. We perform demos of our products, for example, inviting people to crawl inside our fold-out tent to perform introspective activities, such as collecting tears (we have a library of books that might make you cry). We have developed an audio system in the pushcart through which we advertise our various products by way of cup, string, and lollipop; when the lollipop is clenched between the teeth of a willing participant, my voice can be heard—their skull acts as a resonator—as if from deep within their body. Ultimately, in our use of the business model, we communicate our commitment to the sustainability and duration of this research, to supporting other artists interested in this conversation, and to imagining a culture that values art for its power to affect us. This project draws upon current post-relational aesthetic performance techniques and the resurgent DIY fervor, but is also inspired by the Chicago occult publisher DeLaurence Scott and Co. The inclusion of this very dubious historic model—his products were either fraudulent, plagiarized, or just absurd—is our way of keeping alive a self-critical dialogue about the real risk involved in buying into the quiet radicality of our proposition–to treat daily practice as a site for creative freedom and experimentation.
